Merry Christmas!

I finally, after many weeks, have something in my inventory - 4 bags of Ethiopian Guji Buku are available at the secret location. For those in the know, go ahead and grab one and venmo me $10.

Note that the pricing remains the same - a buck an ounce - despite the increase in coffee bean prices. In case there was any doubt, this ain’t no business!

Please note that just because I’m keeping things deliberately obscure, I’m not trying to run some kind of exclusive club. These beans are open to anyone, so don’t be shy about clueing anyone else in to this.

I don’t recall if I ever described in this blog what I’m really up to. I’m actively working on software involving algorithmic and AI-driven analysis of coffee roast profiles. This is basically my sabbatical project. I’m considering open sourcing it, as it’s an interesting open-ended problem that could benefit from collaboration. In addition I’m planning a software product which will fill an unmet need in the coffee roasting community, and this analysis piece will be a value add for this product.

In the meantime, each time I roast I’m dog fooding my own software. So one of the reasons I prefer to sell my beans at or below cost is that y’all are doing me a favor. More consumers gives me the opportunity to roast more more beans, thus yielding more test data.

About the Guji Buku:

The vendor of this bean assigned it a cupping score of 94. Coffee is scored on a 0-100 scale, similar to wine. Just like wine, a score above 90 is impressive; even a mediocre roast of it will probably be good.

I still don’t think I’ve really nailed the roast recipe for this one, but I think the beans I’ve just made available are pretty good anyway. I still have some greens left, and plan to roast the rest of it this week, so I still have an opportunity to improve it.

Those who don’t like fruit bombs like the Guji, I have a lot of Sumatran left and I’ll be focusing on that next. I’ll probably experiment with a mix of medium and darker roasts of this, both of which I hope will be excellent either black or brewed strong with a lot of milk.
